Summary
Boy genius Hiro and Baymax, a robot, search for his brother who disappeared
Review
Grades 3-5 In this manga adaptation of the hit movie of the same name, 14-year-old genius Hiro attends college with his older brother, Tadashi, in San Fransokyo and shows little patience with most people. Hiro has created microbots that can join to take on almost any shape, while Tadashi has created Baymax, a medical robot that resembles a marshmallow. When Tadashi disappears one night, Hiro is heartbroken, but it’s not until he actually injures himself that Baymax activates. Together, they investigate Hiro’s disappearance, and they uncover a sinister plot. With the help of Tadashi’s friends, Hiro and Baymax fight back against the villains. Though Ueno has changed a few plot elements, young readers who loved the movie, particularly those who love manga, will get a kick out of this adaptation. Ueno’s black-and-white, manga-style art does a great job of communicating action. Since the movie was such a hit, this would be an especially useful title for kids interested in reading manga but need a welcoming entry point to the genre. -- Kan, Kat (Reviewed 06-01-2015) (Booklist, vol 111, number 19, p68)
