Biographical or historical data
Julian Bond (1940- ) is a political and civil rights activist. While studying at Morehouse College in 1960, he helped form the Committee on Appeal for Human Rights (COAHR), as well as the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Comittee (SNCC). In 1965 he was elected to the House of Representatives of the Georgia Legislature and in 1975 was elected to the Georgia Senate. In 1986, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Congress. Since then, he has taught the history and politics of the Civil rights movement at several universities and has served on the board of several civil rights and peace organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
