/* Starred Review */ After two decades out of print, one of the seminal works of modern comics has finally been extricated from legal snarls of incredible complexity and made available again, beautifully recolored. Pre-Swamp Thing , pre-Watchmen , this was the first story by Alan Moore (pseudonymous here) to retool an existing series in a darker, more adult fashion. The series was Marvelman , created in 1950s Britain as a takeoff of America's Captain Marvel. In Moore's 1980s revival (renamed Miracleman for American publication) middle-aged Michael Moran finally recalls a magic word that has been plaguing his dreams, and once again becomes the superpowerful Miracleman—only to discover that the heroic exploits he just now remembers performing have an awful secret behind them. In contrast to the mythic tone the series adopts later, the formative work here combines grimness and intrigue with a dose of satire. After Moore left, the series was continued by Neil Gaiman (during his tenure on Sandman ) but left unfinished—yet Marvel has announced that once the original stories are reprinted, Gaiman will finally complete the run as originally planned. VERDICT Essential for every adult collection.— S.R. --Steve Raiteri (Reviewed September 15, 2014) (Library Journal, vol 139, issue 15, p58)
