Biographical or historical data
The National Black Arts Festival was created by the Fulton County Arts Council in 1987. The 10-day festival showcases work by artists of African descent in the disciplines of music, dance, theater, film, folk arts, visual arts, performance art, and literature. The festival takes place every other year during midsummer in Atlanta, Georgia, and typically presents the work of 1,500 artists from the United States, Africa, the Carribean, Europe, and South America. The first festival was held in 1988. Festival events are held in venues throughout the city, and many events are free. The Festival is suported by an annual operating grant from the Fulton County Arts Council, as well as grants from other public agencies, private foundations, and through corporate sponsorship, merchandising, and membership.
